Matteo Cibic presents LAKAPOLIESIS
With the occasion of MiArt and Milano Design Week 2025, the Fondazione Luigi Rovati presents Lakapoliesis by Matteo Cibic (born 1983). From 26 March to 13 Aprii, the Art Pavilion and garden play host to a new body of the artist’s works, which use experimental languages to explore the cognitive capabilities of the plant world.
Lakapoliesis (2024) is a project that redefines the traditional relationship between animals and plants, reversing its anthropocentric perspective. lnspired by the illustrateci maps of Alexander Humboldt and the writings of Jagadish Chandra Bose and Monica Gagliano, Cibic creates large format, three-dimensional chromatic maps and vegetai compositions, aspiring to describe the emotions and sentiments of the plant world. Protagonists of the exhibition are wood sculptures, recycled aluminium, marble dust and knotted wool, giving form to a new “vegetai nomenclature” through an originai and asymmetrical narrative.
In the garden, two large-format, recycled-aluminium sculptures – createci with the support of the CIAL (National Aluminium Packaging Consortium) – tel1 the story of the immortality of this materiai and its capacity for rebirth in a multiplicity of forms.
Alongside these new works, the exhibition in the Art Pavilion includes an excerpt from Dermapoliesis (2017), a previous project in which Cibic imagined a future in which plants can generate pre-processed perfumes and other products, through a series of botanica! prototypes of a hybrid, futuristic nature that speak of new, hypothetical systems of manufacturing.
The two projects, the results of research that Cibic has been conducting unceasingly since 2017, show how the artist’s fascination with the plant world has changed over time: from a tool in the service of mankind, optimizing our production and distribution, to a mysterious object that operates in times and spaces that elude human contrai.
ABOUT
Matteo Cibic (Parma, 1983) is a transmedia artist who uses his work to explore the world and imagine utopian futures. Cibic’s oeuvre is rooted in the phenomenon of pareidolia, or our tendency to perceive faces or emotions in inanimate objects. Since 2022, he has extended this exploration to the study of plants’ emotions and cognitive capabilities. Whether it’s creating an object with a hybrid and extravagant function or a plant-like sculpture with a joyful form, Cibic’s work always evokes a sense of fantasy and pleasure. His works have been exhibited in numerous prestigious locations, including the MAO in Paris, the Shanghai Museum of Glass, the Biennale lnternationale Design Saint-Étienne, the MUDAC in Lausanne, Milan’s Triennale Design Museum, the Musée Mandet in Riom, the Museo of Montelupo near Florence, and the Jewellery Museum in Vicenza.
