Visions of Catalonia

Milano Design Week 2024

Catalonia presents its design craftsmanship at the Milano Design Week: innovative objects that prioritize proximity, sustainability, and social commitment.

Catalan craftsmanship is participating, for the first time, in the Milano Design Week, the most important fair for contemporary design and interior design in Europe and one of the most important in the world. This event takes place from April 15 to 21 this year, within the framework of the Salone del Mobile

Catalan participation is driven by the Government of Catalonia, through the Consortium of Commerce, Crafts, and Fashion (CCAM) of the Department of Enterprise and Labor, which has selected 24 works by professionals in craftsmanship and design from different disciplines for the exhibition "Visions of Catalonia. Designing Craft," which continues its international journey after participating in the Dubai Design Week last November.

This exhibition, which will be held at Sirtori26 in the Porta Venezia Design District, highlights craftsmanship as a method of producing everyday objects for domestic use, beyond decoration or aesthetic enjoyment, and explains how design intervenes to give them utility. The exhibition presents hybrid projects between craftsmanship and design, where factors such as the reduction of materials and/or objects, the use of local raw materials, zero waste production processes, high durability of products, dignified aging, and easy return to the circular economy cycle are present. Everyday objects can be found, from hydraulic tiles to pitchers, from seats to lights, or from switches to coffee makers.

The 24 proposals selected for the exhibition are the work of: Bussoga, Sastres Paperers, Quim Larrea, Óscar Tusquets, Miquel Milà, André Ricard, Carme Pinós, Jordi Ribaudí Trepat, Oriol Guimerà for Font Barcelona, Jordi Canudas Faura, Wolf & Miu, Núria Pié Barrufet, Estudi Limón, Amor de Madre, La Tornería (Jordi Pladevall Arxé, BAG Disseny Studio, Martí Guixé Roca, Emiliana Design Studio, Eliurpi, Ferran Collado Arasa, Andreu Carulla, Guillem Ferran, La granja, Benditas Studio, Oiko Studio. Teixidors (Núria Bitria), Vergés (Andreu Carulla), VO Estudi, and Mosaics Martí.

THE EXHIBITION: VISIONS OF CATALONIA. DESIGNING CRAFT

The exhibition Visions of Catalonia. Designing Craft originates from the II Biennial of Catalan Craftsmanship, an initiative promoted by the Government, which was presented last July 2023, with the aim of positioning and exporting the talent of Catalan artisans and artists to the world, as well as promoting their commercialization and opening the sector to new international markets. The second edition, dedicated to the relationship between contemporary craftsmanship and design, consists of the exhibition "Visions of Catalonia. Designing Craft," a catalog, and a website that showcases artisans and designers with their most recent works.
